NEW DELHI - The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the Delhi government to provide within 48 hours basic amenities, including potable water and toilets, in shelters meant for the homeless in Kashmere Gate area in north Delhi.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna directed the Urban Shelter Improvement Board to provide 10 mobile toilets within a week in other shelters.

The court told the government to take steps to construct permanent toilets in various shelter homes within two months.

The court also directed police to inquire into reports that a woman gave birth to a baby in a park in central Delhi’s Pusa Road.

The court earlier directed that helter homes for destitute pregnant women be set up in the city.

The bench asked police to file their report by the next date of hearing.

The bench was hearing a petition after taking cognisance of media reports about the demolition of a night shelter in Pusa Road in December last year.
