Two convicted in Orissa for judo coach’s murder

BHUBANESWAR - A fast track court in this Orissa capital convicted two people Monday in the sensational murder of judo coach Biranchi Das, a government lawyer said.

Judge Vivekananda Das held prime accused Raja Acharya and his associate Akhya Behera guilty in the crime after examining several witnesses, Additional Public Prosecutor S.K. Mund told reporters.

The court will pronounce the sentence Dec 17.

Biranchi Das, the former coach of marathon runner Budhia Singh, was shot dead outside a judo centre here April 13, 2008.

While Behera surrendered in Bhopal April 22, Acharya, who faces several cases of extortion, murder and kidnapping, surrendered to police in Goa in May.

Swadesh Das, a defence lawyer, said Acharya and Behera will appeal in the higher court against the judgment.
