AG defends DOJ’s performance in Black Panther case

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder is defending the Justice Department’s handling of a New Black Panthers Party case in which government attorneys obtained a narrower civil court order than Bush administration officials had sought.

The department investigated complaints that New Black Panther Party leaders King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson intimidated white voters at a Philadelphia polling place in 2008.

At a news conference Monday on another subject, Holder said that the top career person in the civil rights division made the determination on the way in which the case was resolved, seeking an injunction against one person.

The result has inflamed conservatives.
