Kerry: Protected status for Guatemalan immigrants

BOSTON — Sen. John Kerry has urged President Barack Obama to grant temporary protected status to Guatemalan immigrants living in the United States.

The Massachusetts Democrat wrote to Obama on Thursday that the Central American nation has suffered after Tropical Storm Agatha and the eruption of the Pacaya (pah-KY’-ah) volcano. Kerry says Guatemalan immigrants shouldn’t be forced to return “to a ravaged homeland” where some basic human needs can’t be met.

He says Guatemala also has seen a recent surge in narcotics violence and an increased gang presence.

Undocumented Guatemalans have pressed various elected officials to grant them temporary protected status so they can remain in the U.S. Thousands of Guatemalan immigrants are believed to live in Massachusetts.
