ALLAHABAD - The Allahabad High Court Wednesday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a reply on petitions challenging the state government’s decision to bar civic poll candidates from using political parties’ symbols.

The state government has to file a counter affidavit in two weeks. The matter will come up for hearing Aug 3.

Two petitions, challenging the new rule that debars political parties from contesting the municipal elections, were filed Tuesday by the People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) and a Mathura-based advocate Abdul Jabbar.

In both the lawsuits, the rule was challenged on the ground that it was unconstitutional.

The state cabinet June 18 decided that the urban civic elections would be on party-less lines.
